A bipolar disorder at times goes unnoticed as it’s
often mistaken as other most common mental disorders, depression or anxiety
disorder. Some recent studies reveal that about 10 percent of people with
anxiety, depression could also be bipolar. It is always difficult to identify
people suffering from bipolar.
“Bipolar disorder is a serious problem, with high
levels of disability and the risk of suicide. When it is present in depressed patients,
it can easily be overlooked. Under-diagnosis and over-diagnosis of illnesses
bring problems,” says Dr. Tom Hughes, consultant psychiatrist at Leeds and
York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and part of a research study
published in the British Journal of General Practice (BJGP).
The study revealed that 10 percent of people aged
between 16 and 40 who are prescribed antidepressants for depression or anxiety,
have unrecognized bipolar disorder. This phenomenon is more common among
younger patients and those who reported more severe episodes of depression.
Bipolar disorder often co-exists with depression
and can be difficult to diagnose. It poses great difficulty for rehabs, even
for the best in line like the bipolar
treatment centers in Los Angeles, to distinguish bipolar patients
from others.
Many symptoms of being on a high, like enhanced
energy and activity, increased confidence, over-talkativeness or being easily
distracted, are overlooked by people and they do not report it to the doctor.
This leads to a big gap in diagnosing bipolar in people.
Sometimes, bipolar patients remain undiagnosed
even when under treatment for any other problem at a rehab center. It’s
possible that patients receiving treatment at any of the drug rehabilitation centers in
California could also be bipolar. Proper screening and detailed
investigation would help doctors in treating bipolar patients.
